Training my jack russel terrier to bark?

We are trying to house train our Jack Russel Terrier puppy, He is 4 months old and he is getting better about not having as many accidents in the house but he needs to let us know that he needs to go out. He goes to the door but he is quiet. Then if we don’t notice he is at a door he goes to the bathroom by the door. We want to train him to Bark at the door. SO how do we train him to bark once he is at the door and he needs to go out?

Puppy Training – Analyzing Animal Behavior

When training your pets, you may notice that different dogs behave differently, and they may respond in various ways to your training methods. The right thing to do, is to observe their behavior and be tolerant if they make mistakes during training. As a good trainer, you should never try to instill fear into your pet. Over time, the dog will learn to fear the owner, and tends to run away when the owner arrives. As a pet owner, you want the pup to be closer to you. With fear, the distance between you can your pet will drift further apart.

In other words, as you train your dog, you need to aware of the inner world of your pet. That is where behavior analysis comes in. In the beginning, you may not know what the behavior means. What you can do, however, is to pay attention and take note of the behavior. You can always consult other pet owners or a professional specialist later on if you still can’t figure out why your pet is behaving in a certain manner. Below is a list of commonly seen behavior.

1) Barking unnecessarily.

Barking is the only way a pup knows how to attract attention. For sure, you know that the pup needs some attention. Your job, is to figure out why your pet is barking unnecessarily. There are many reasons that may account for the excessive barking. For instance, it may be suffering from separation anxiety and all it needs is some company. It may be left in the crate for too long, and it’s getting bored. Or it may be suffering from some health issues. Don’t just scold or cane the dog just because it’s barking. That is jumping to conclusions. Investigate first to find out the cause. Punishment is usually unnecessary.

2) Damaging home furniture.

In many ways, dogs behave like children. They sometimes have a short attention span, and need things to keep themselves occupied. This is especially true for puppies. If they are left alone with nothing to play with, they will run around the house and start nibbling at your furniture. Soon, you will notice unsightly marks on your wooden furniture. To solve this problem, have a room for your puppy, and keep it occupied with lots of toys. There are many types of toy bones in the market. Those silicon types will do just fine.

3) Digging holes in the garden.

Some dogs have a strong digging instinct. These are dogs that will chase after smaller animals, or dig holes in the garden or the back yard. The Jack Russell is one such example. Understand that the dog is just following its instincts. However, with proper training, these dogs can become obedient. Be patient with the dogs, especially if they are just puppies.

Most of the behavioral problems are caused by the natural personalities of the dogs, or by health issues. Therefore, to investigate the cause, always check for health problems. If the pet is perfectly healthy, then it’s just the dog being its playful self.

We are think about getting a Jack Russell Puppy around 5 months old. We barley travel at all but once a year or so we go away for the weekend and want to litter train the dog just in case. Ferret Training – Litter Box Training Tips

A common mistake ferret owners make is assuming their ferret is naturally inclined to use a litter box like a cat does. This is not true. Ferrets are separated from their mothers at an early age and never receive the stage at which mama ferret teaches them to use a litter box.

With that said ferrets are intelligent, trainable animals. Generally, the easiest way to train a ferret is with positive reinforcement. Simply put, by offering them a reward for performing a behavior you desire.

First: If you don’t have a cage, get one. It is very important that your ferret have a place to sleep, eat, play and use the litter box.

Initially, keep your ferret confined to the cage with a litter box. The ferret needs to get used to a small confined area, and become comfortable using his litter box before you can expand his play and roam areas.

Make sure the litter box covers two sides of the cage and secure it so your ferret cannot move or tip it over. The front lip of the litter box should be low enough to allow your ferret easy access. There are several commercial brands made specifically for ferrets.

Use a dust free litter. I like Marshall Ferret Liter. It is made from specially processed recycled newspaper that stops odor. Avoid scented and clumping sand litters. Because ferrets like to dig, the litter can get caught in their nose or throat. Perfumed litters can harm a ferrets sensitive nasal passages or cause allergic reactions. Never use wood shavings in a ferrets cage. Respiratory problems could develop over a period of time. If you run out of regular litter, shredded newspaper or paper towels are recommended.

At first your ferret may think of his litter box as a place to play. To correct this place some of his feces and urine soaked litter in one corner of the litter box. Ferrets rely on smell to find their toilet, so by smelling their feces and urine in their litter box they will realize this is where they should go to the bathroom. When cleaning the litter box, always put a little feces back in the box until litter training is complete.

Because ferrets have a small digestive tract food will pass through their bodies in just 2-3 hours. Upon waking in the morning your ferret will usually have to use the facilities within five minutes. You may have to place him in the litter box facing the used litter. Only let your ferret out of his cage after he has used his litter box.

Things to remember when litter box training your ferret:

1) Always secure the litter box to the cage. If you don’t your ferret will move it, tip it over and potty behind or next to it.

2) If your ferret starts using other areas of the cage to potty put his water and foods bowls in the spots you don’t want him to go. Also, place bedding in specific areas of the cage. Your ferret will associate these as eating and sleeping places and won’t potty there.

3) Use positive reinforcement – reward your ferret with his favorite treat when he uses the litter box.

4) If your ferret does have an accident move the stool into the litter box. Your ferret finds his litter box by smell. Smelling his feces in the litter box will ensure your ferret will use it again.

5) Never yell or hit your ferret. This is counter productive and will only confuse him. Never discipline your ferret for going outside the litter box after the fact. If you don’t witness the act, punishing your ferret later will not help. He just won’t understand what he’s being punished for.

6) Scoop out the litter box on a daily basis, and wash the litter box on a weekly basis. Remember to keep a little piece of stool in the box.

After a short time it will become habit for your ferret to use the litter box. Patient and consistent training will produce a ferret with good litter habits, which in turn makes for less cleanup time for you and more time for you to enjoy your boundless bundle of joy.

This is my 11-week-old Jack Russell puppy after one week of clicker training. She only knows two commands so far but she has them down pat. I learned how to train her by watching Zak George here on YouTube. I can’t believe how easy it was to train her! It only took 3 or 4 five minute training sessions a day. After 3 days she was doing both commands really well, but after a week she is a pro at “sit” and “down”
