Home Security Systems and Pets

Monday, July 5th, 2010

In many households across the country, the family dog is as much a part of the family as anyone else.  In addition to making great companions, dogs can play an integral role in home security.  Regardless of whether homeowners have a 15 pound Jack Russell Terrier or a 90 pound German Shepherd, dogs almost always protect their territory, alerting homeowners when something is amiss, or when a person who has or is approaching their home seems suspicious.  Playing such an integral role in home security, homeowners with pets often wonder how their home security system can coexist with the family dog without resulting in the local police paying a visit every time he or she gets up to keep an eye on the squirrels outside, bark at the mailman, or get a drink of water.

Pet immune motion detectors are becoming more and more common, with most major home security system companies offering them as a part of their security networks.  Generally speaking, these pet immune motion detectors use passive infrared (PIR) technology.  Passive infrared technology senses changes in temperature that occur so quickly, they could not be caused by a rise in room temperature, only by way of a living being (or in other cases, a fire) moving through a room.  Pet immune motion detectors allow users to set a baseline for detection that will allow for the changes in temperature caused by a pet moving through a room, but will trigger in the event of a person moving through the room.  These sensors do, however, have their limits.  With some types of pets weighing as much, and in some cases more than humans, pet immune motion detectors can only ignore pets up to a certain size.  Generally speaking, if the family dog weighs more than 60 pounds or so, these detectors will not be able to ignore him or her, as the change in temperature caused by a dog this large is too close to that of a human moving through a room or home.  For homeowners with large dogs, other measures will need to be undertaken to accommodate the coexistence of the home alarm system and family pet.

In addition to the availability of pet immune motion detectors, many passive infrared sensors allow for other settings that can assist homeowners in preventing the family pet from inviting the local police over whenever he or she needs some company.  Motion placement is one of the easiest ways to allow a pet and security system to coexist, as it involves setting motion detectors in places that burglars would want to go, but that the pet may not have access to during the day.  Likewise, pulse counts and beam patterns can be set to avoid the detection of the family pet, while still providing protection against the possibility of an intruder entering the home.

Lastly, and perhaps most easily, is the option for homeowners to give the family pet a portion of the house within which to run free, and a portion, preferably where valuables would traditionally be stored, within which they do not have access when the family is not home.  This offers a simple way to balance the need of the family dog to move around a bit during the day, with the home security needs of the entire family.

Reputable home security firms understand that homeowners have questions about their security, including the implementation of a security system that allows the family pet some movement, so for additional questions, homeowners should refer to their local adt security provider. The leader in home security for decades, ADT home security personnel can assist homeowners with any and all home security questions.

Training Pets

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Dogs mostly are more intelligent than most people realise. They understand far more than we give them credit for. And, by using this canine inherent ability we can soon have pets doing anything we ask of them.

A big secret in training animals is using their inherent abilities to our advantage. With dogs, this inherent ability could relate to their ancestral purpose, such as hunting, so ingrained in terriers or with kelpies or border collies that love to muster almost anything that moves!

Those dog breeds that love to hunt are dogs that also love to seek things out, while other dogs love to muster. These traits are things that dogs just love doing naturally, and we can use these traits to make it fun for pets to learn new things. I once had a Jack Russell terrier called Pippy and she loved to muster cattle and sheep. She became one of my best “cattle dogs!” working with a kelpie and collie. This goes to prove you need to watch what your dog loves doing and use this trait to advantage when teaching.

This also applies to goats. My wife raised two orphan Angora Kids goats. They were snow white and were smaller than a toy poodle. They loved to sit on my wife’s lap in the lounge room and watch T.V. with her. Their names were Charlie and Jeanie. My 14 year old son took a liking to Jeanie and soon had her doing all sorts of tricks. He simply used the goat’s natural ability and love of jumping up onto chairs, rocks or any high object, a sort of King of the Castle game that goats seem to like doing. Anyway, in a short time he had Jeanie learning to jump from one 12 litre oil drum top to another, several lined up in a row.

It was a simple task to teach Jeanie to jump onto the first barrel, then jump to the next, and jump four more in a row. At the last barrel my son would extend his arms out to Jeanie and call her and she would launch herself into his arms. She did this simply because she loved jumping on things, which my son simply exploited.

Then one day when Jeanie was almost fully grown, the vet came to check the goat herd and Jeanie was amongst the flock. But as the vet moved amongst the flock checking their general health Jeanie just followed him about like a ‘shadow’. Eventually the vet straightened up and asked me what was up with the young goat that kept following him? He then made the fatal mistake of holding his arm out to point at Jeanie. Instantly she noted the signal and launched herself into the vet’s arms nearly bowling him over amongst the other goats. It frightened the life out of him!!!

This sort of training is easily achieved with dogs. Many dogs love to jump onto things and so do cats. But this is where ‘bribery and corruption’ comes into play. This bribery is achieved with some small tasty tit-bits. You use small pieces of meaty bits like cabanossi or chopped off pieces of sausage or chicken. Anything tasty will do that your pet loves.

You use these small food bites to teach them to obey a whole range of commands such as:

• To sit
• To come
• To walk easily on the lead without tugging and pulling.
• And to teach your pet to do tricks.

It’s of real value to use a shoulder harness when walking your dog or any other pet such as your cat, goat or even a pig. If your pet is in the habit of trying to pull too hard on the lead or rush at other pets being taken for a walk, you simply quickly turn the pet around in the opposite direction and walk away. The pet usually looks astonished at this sudden change in your behavior. But your pet is more intelligent than most people it credit for. You only have to do this a few times and the pet gets the message and behaves perfectly. You can also use your ‘bribery and corruption’ food bites to take your pets attention off anything that you want it to, by giving it a quick sniff of the food and it will switch its attention to you immediately.

There are many training systems that you can use. I have reviewed quite a number. Some are a waste of time and money. But I have found a few that are really good. To check out the best go to my review site below.

If you have a pet that is misbehaving you will find among these training systems one that will suit you and your pet, which will make both your lives really enjoyable.

Famous Pets

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Over the years, pets have become famous for all different reasons. We know famous pets from television, movies, politics and even from their famous owners. Depending on your age you may remember everyone’s favorite German Shepherd, Rin Tin Tin. The  original  Rin Tin Tin  was a puppy found by an American soldier in France during World War I.  The dog became famous  for  being in movies.  In the 1950′s a television show based on this dog became popular.

Another famous pet from the 1950′s was the much loved Lassie. Lassie was on television from 1954 to 1973. The female Lassie was actually played by various male collies, all related to the original dog, Pal. Lassie first came to life as a main character in a short story written in the Saturday Evening Post in 1938. That lead to the book “Lassie, Come Home” and the movie of the same name.

There were famous horses on television too. You probably all remember Mr. Ed, the talking horse. Of course only Mr. Ed’s owner Wilbur ever heard him talking. Mr. Ed was played by a Palomino horse. Trainers got Mr. Ed  to move his lips like he was talking by giving him peanut butter. The comedy was on television from 1961 to 1965. The famous cowboy Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger performed together for over 25 years. Another popular television show from the 1950′s was The Lone Ranger. He was a Texas marshall fighting crime in the old West. He had a big white horse called Silver.

Some more recent famous pets from television and movies include, White Fang, about a wolf-dog’s journey through the Yukon territory during the Klondike Gold Rush, and who could forget Hooch from Turner and Hooch? Turner, played by Tom Hanks was a neat freak that got stuck with a murder victim’s dog. Hooch  was played by a Dogue de Bordeaux, which is a type of mastiff. Of course Hooch  was a big  slobbery mess.  In the movie, Hooch gives up his life to save Turner.

From more recent television, we  became familiar with Eddie, the Jack Russell terrier from Frazier, and from the 1980′s, Zeus and Apollo, the Doberman Pinschers from Magnum P.I.  Some of my favorite pets from television are cartoons. Think of Dino the Dinosaur from the Flintstones. Dino barked like a dog, ran around like a dog, licking faces and catching sticks. In fact Dino was not a dog, he was a snorkasaurus. Let’s not forget about Astro, the Jetsons dog. Young Elroy finds the stray dog and takes him home. Of   course   Elroy is  not allowed to keep the dog until Astro saves the family from a burglar. Dino and Astro were important family members to the Flintstones and Jetsons, just like our dogs are important family members to us.

In thinking of famous pets, let’s not forget the pets of the political world. Winston Churchill had an orange cat named Jock. The Carters had a Siamese cat and the Clinton family had a black and white cat named Socks. Franklin Roosevelt had a Scottish terrier, as did George H. W. Bush and Laura. John Quincy Adams kept an alligator in a White House bathroom. It was a gift from the Marquis de Lafayette. Calvin Coolidge had raccoons running around the White House. Who knew it was so crazy at the President’s house? These are just a few famous pets. What famous pets do you know?
