i dont think it's a good idea at all to use a shock collar. either go out with him, let him inside, or give him something to do. if he's not getting the exercise he needs, he's never going to quit barking. he could just be bored, does he have toys in the yard? most of all, you gotta make sure he get PLENTY of exercise, it will drain his energy and he wont want to take the energy to bark all the time. and maybe even a companion dog? i know most people wouldn't recomend that, but i do. some dogs just want someone to be with constantly, like my dogs. they act up a lot more when they have no other dogs/people with them. i don't promise that getting another dog will help, it might even make it worse, it might not. i've had at least 2 dogs at a time since i was a baby and i've found out throughout my life that when they "act up", they are BORED. they need something to do, especially if they're a high-energy dog, like jack russells. well, hope my info helped!

A bark collar is only the way to go IF your dog is getting the exercise, mental stimulation and attention he needs. If not all the barking collar will do it make hm vent his excess energy in another way. Obviously you are leaving him outside too long and he's bored out of his lil terrier brain. Start actually doing things with your dog that are fun for him and tire him out.

yes PLEASE do not use a shock collar. Just think how would you feel if every time you tried to express something you got shocked? From the sound of it he just wants to be with people! There are many other ways to train your dogs not to bark incessantly. Fill a tin can with pebbles/coins and shake it at him whenever he barks. It worked for my dog.

The question is - would you use it on yourself? I doubt it, you certainly shouldn't use it on your dog then either.

Jack Russells are very high energy dogs, they need a lot of exercise. The answer to your problem is not to leave him outside alone, if you can't play with him out there, bring him in so the neighbors don't get annoyed.

i don't use the kind that responds to barking but when my two jack russells start fighting which lasts 3 or 4 days off and on i use a shock collar to help break up the fights otherwise they could seriously hurt each other so yes id say try it just be careful with how high the power is set because to high may kill him

They have bark collars that spray a puff of this ctronella smelling stuff in their face when they bark. It's totally safe and effective. Just another option. they'd use these in my obedience classes when a dog would be "barky"...but the canister has to be right under their chin for it to work (so it has to be fitted properly)
Here's one place that has them (there are many)

We had a really bad experience with a shock collar once. We had a barky beagle and had to go away on a business trip. A friend offered to care for the dog. She had a dog of her own. We gave her the collar and said "only use it if his barking becomes a problem." Well she left it on the dog the whole time we were gone and HER dog kept running up to our dog and barking at him nonstop. Well of course, the collar kept going off and zapping our dog. He was very traumatized by the whole experience.

The moral to the story is... I would NEVER put a shock collar on a dog and leave him unattended. You don't know who or what might come up to him and set it off. Frankly, we haven't used a shock collar on any dog of ours since... and we've had quite a few.

shock collars are not ok no matter what the problem

use a rattle bottle to start. this is free made from pebbles / coins and an empty drinks bottle. if unsuccessful with this try a citronella or ultrasound collar. both of which are kinder to your dog than the shock variety.
